How often do you hear the story of a man who was immaculately born from within a lotus flower with a thousand petals, in the middle of a lake, having been sent as a meteor from the heart of the Boudha of Boundless light? Lotus-Born is the fabulous story of the mystic, master scholar, and outrageous yogi, Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born, who grew up an adopted prince, was banished, burned at the stake in a neighboring kingdom, and continued miraculously unscathed, wandering through cemeteries, dancing on corpses, and proceeded to live more than five hundred years. He is regarded by the most sane Tibetans as a real, historical figure, the founder of Buddhism in Tibet where he subjugated demons and taught the Buddha's teachings.
The complete story of how Buddhism was planted in Tibet is available in English for the first time with the publication of this book. Lotus-Born is a translation of a biography of the great master recorded in the ninth century by his foremost Tibetan disciple, the princess Yeshe Tsogyal. Many of these biographies were concealed as terma treasures to protect them against the changes of time.

In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, devotion to one's guru or spiritual master is considered to be of the utmost importance in spiritual practice. The instructions of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, based upon the teachings of the great eighteenth-century saint and visionary Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, focus on the devotional practices of Guru Yoga, "Merging with the Mind of the Guru."

During a month-long seminar in France during 1990, Vajrayana Buddhism master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-91) presented this teaching on the mind training of the Indian master Atisha (982-1054) and the Tibetan master Thogm Zangpo (1295-1369). It is translated from the Tibetan by the Padmakara Translation Group. The first edition appeared in 1993.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) was one of the most respected and influential Tibetan Buddhist teachers of our age. Here is his memoir of a remarkable life of study, teaching, and solitary retreat, told with a wealth of anecdotes and stories. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) was one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist teachers of the 20th century. While a practitioner in the Nyingma lineage, he held empowerments and teachings from many traditions and was a strong supporter of the Rimey non-sectarian movement. This Rimey Lama Chopa is a liturgical guruyoga text encompassing all stages of the Path to Enlightenment, with special emphasis on the Eight Chariots Rimey lineages. Lama Chopa is one of the central esoteric practices of Vajrayana Buddhism; and as such, this text is a unique and powerful contribution to world spiritual literature. On the centennary of Dilgo Khyentse's birth, a great celebration was held in Nepal, for which a locally-printed English edition of his well-known Rimey Lama Chopa was commissioned. The limited English edition was created by Glenn Mullin, a well-known Canadian Buddhist translator with many books to his credit. We are fortunate to have received permission from Mr. Mullin to create this new edition. In addition, we are fortunate to have the participation of Dilgo Khyentse's chief western disciple, the Venerable Matthieu Ricard, who has written an insightful foreword for the book and provided personal photographs of Rinpoche for this edition. 50% of profits from sales of this book will go to benefit charitable activities of Rinpoche's Karuna-Shechen Foundation in the Himalayas.

The vow to perfect oneself in order to perfect others is called the thought of enlightenment or bodhichitta. This implies that every single action word or thought even the most trivial is dedicated to the good of all beings. To accomplish the good of others, we must first perfect ourselves by purifying and transforming our minds. This is the aim of what we call the preliminary practices, which establish the foundations of all spiritual progress. In this book, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche explains a key practice text composed by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-1892) on the Vajrayana preliminaries: taking refuge, generating the thought of achieving enlightenment for the sake of all beings, performing the meditation, and recitation of Vajrasattva to remove hindrances on the path to enlightenment, offering the mandala to accumulate merit and wisdom, and developing proper reliance on a spiritual teacher. Clear, direct, and personal, these instructions illuminate the heart of Vajrayana practice. Included here are the Tibetan text as well as the mantras and prayers commonly recited in conjunction with this practice.

What would be the practical implications of caring more about others than about yourself? This is the radical theme of this extraordinary set of instructions, a training manual composed in the fourteenth century by the Buddhist hermit Ngulchu Thogme, here explained in detail by one of the great Tibetan Buddhist masters of the twentieth century, Dilgo Khyentse. In the Mahayana tradition, those who have the courage to undertake the profound change of attitude required to develop true compassion are called bodhisattvas. Their great resolve--to consider others' needs as paramount, and thus to attain enlightenment for the sake of all living creatures--carries them beyond the limits imposed by the illusions of "I" and "mine," culminating in the direct realization of reality, transcending dualistic notions of self and other. This classic text presents ways that we can work with our own hearts and minds, starting wherever we find ourselves now, to unravel our small-minded preoccupations and discover our own potential for compassion, love, and wisdom. Many generations of Buddhist practitioners have been inspired by these teachings, and the great masters of all traditions have written numerous commentaries. Dilgo Khyentse's commentary is probably his most extensive recorded teaching on Mahayana practice.
